Crowns

A crown is a cap that is placed over a tooth and held in place by dental adhesive or cement.

Crowns are used for several reasons:

  • as a protective cover for badly decayed teeth or fractured teeth
  • as a permanent restoration for teeth with large fillings
  • to correct minor problems in natural teeth like spacing and irregular shape or severe discolouration.

Dental crowns are made of metal in black or silver, which can be covered in porcelain to make them look like your other teeth. We provide full porcelain crowns for a completely natural look, and find that the results are often difficult to distinguish from your natural teeth. Crowns can be handmade, completely from porcelain.

While the crown is being made, a temporary crown can be fitted. This won’t be as strong as the final cap but is strong enough to chew with.

Once your crown is ready, the temporary crown is removed and the tooth surfaces cleaned. The completed crown is tried on the tooth for fit, harmony with the bite, and appearance. Finally, the crown is cemented onto the prepared tooth with dental cement.
